Back in June (Father's Day) I started my first reverse painting on an old window. Dad had just passed away a few months before. He had Alzheimers. It's such a terrible disease and I was here in Michigan unable to help my mom with him down in Florida. That was killing me, but I can only imagine the pain she was enduring as she watched her husband of 60 years fade away. I'm so thankful that when he did go - it was relatively fast. And so very thankful that he still knew who I was, and most importantly that he knew I was there when he passed.

They say that you can help ward off that disease by improving and exercising your brain. And so with that thought in mind I challenged myself to paint in reverse. Kind of fitting that I started on Father's Day.

I haven't done anything with pastels since then. Am I evolving to this new art? I don't know. But I am enjoying it. I've painted quite a few windows and although I generally paint each one for myself - someone sees it, wants it, and I sell it. No, I'm not complaining. I'm enjoying learning this new artform, and I am excited to see how each one turns out. One thing I realized though. I don't think I can make prints of these. With the reflection of the glass - I cannot get a decent image to make reproductions. Until I can figure that out - each one is most definitely, and without a doubt, one-of-a-kind.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Birches

Large two paned window. I start with a pencil sketch of my idea. This one being a stand of birch trees blanketed by fresh snow.

WORKING ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE WINDOW:

At this point here, my foreground is nearly complete on the right pane of glass. (your left) Before this painting is done, I will have painted another 35 or so trees, and then last I will paint the background.

It's Monday evening now... and more progress done on this window. Tomorrow the paint will be hard enough that I will be able to clean the glass before painting in the background.

Tuesday.. and ready to put in the background. I didn't want any brushstrokes.

After painting the window on Sunday, I've been thinking about doing more. Last night I jumped on another and painted some birch trees. This window is in a bit more disrepair, so I will be giving it a new coat or two of paint before installing the hanging system.

It's been quite a while since I've posted here. Life sometimes takes us on journeys we're not quite prepared for. That's not all bad though. These twists and turns in life can be full of fun and adventure. I guess it's all just in the way you look at it. So wow... it was March the last time I posted. Goodness how time flies!

I have painted a few new pastels, but I feel a change coming. I'm not sure what that is, or what direction I will take. Guess I'll just see where the path leads. In the meantime - I've taken to taking junk and found materials and transforming this stuff into some new life. It's amazing what you can do with virtually nothing.

One thing I really love about this - is that everyone is happy to help you out and provide you with new "canvases" for you to have.

(Spring cleaning just got a whole lot more fun!) This would probably be a great place to mention.. before you go tossing everything out (and into the landfill), consider posting your "trash" on craig's list in any one of these sections: FREE, ARTISTS, or MATERIALS. I'll just betcha there's a lot more of us cruising Craig's List looking for your trash. Another place you can post this junk would be on your local Freenet site. "Think Green" people... and make an artist happy, too!

Just keep an open mind, because virtually anything can be a canvas.

Wine bottles are big fun - painting, decorating, drilling, cutting.... and become hummingbird feeders, wind chimes, lamps... the possibilities are as endless as the imagination will allow.

Leftover ceramic tiles - what great little canvases! These were painted to be individual works - but I have a few other ideas brewing in the back of my head too.

A little while back I was so fortunate to have found four totally awesome basement windows sitting at the curb, seemingly calling my name. They practically jumped off the curb and into my subaru, oh so happy to be coming home with me. Today one of them has found new life as I tried my hand at reverse painting. It's a lot more challenging than I thought it would be - but I am quite pleased with the results.

Art a'La Mode - The Vision

You may have noticed the name Art a'La Mode associated with my artwork. My son Andrew came up with this name, when we started talking about how we may be able to give back, and what we'd call the business.

I see this cute little two story cottage (it’s blue with white trim, a picket fence and a nice big wooden porch) sitting on the edge of main street in a quaint little artsy tourist town. An arbor covered with flowering vine beckons you to enter, while a wooden sign gently sways in the breeze. The words, “Art a’La Mode” tell you that waiting inside, is comfort for the soul. Yard art adorns flower beds, metal sculptures grace the manicured, front yard. A flagstone path winds through a park like setting and invites you to relax in a gazebo and continues on to the steps of the home. Inside, the front rooms are filled with the scent of cappacino and ice cream. A few tables and chairs sit in “the parlor” where patrons are enjoying some ice cream or coffee. The other room is filled with quirky artisan crafts and artwork. The back rooms are loaded with art supplies, work tables and easels. A kiln is in another room with shelves full of pottery ready to be fired. In the evening, a small band sets up in the gazebo. Locals and tourists alike pull up a piece of grass and relax in the night air, listening to the music being played...

This isn't just an ice cream store, or coffee shop, or even an art gallery for that matter. Sure, that's what it looks like on the outside. On the inside though, it's hope, encouragement, and a step into the future for kids with mental illness. Here, at-risk teens will be given the opportunity to work in an environment that is understanding of their unique personalities. Creativity will be encouraged, even rewarded. Family support groups will be held in the form of creative workshops, bridging the communication gap and creating unity in the family unit. Scholarship money will be raised to give a creative student an opportunity to further their education. Artwork sold here, will be consignment based, and created by people with mental illness or by those who support mental health issues.

Yes, although this may only be a dream, to me it's a vision of a better future for many kids plagued with an illness that do not receive the support they desperately need.

In 2007, I attempted to start a non-profit organization and called it Artrageous Minds. I'm not sure what I was thinking - a single mom, barely making enough money to make ends meet, trying to start a nonprofit. Alone? (shakes her head) Life took a couple of nasty turns and I had to let that go. But my vision has not faded. Every day I look at my son, and every day I'm reminded that there are millions of children and families out there who are suffering through this illness. I've begun to share the vision again, and I'm finding people who wish to help. We're venturing into yet another new year. Perhaps 2011 will be the year that big doors will open, making the dream a reality.

I've been spending the last few months helping to launch a new local art guild and gallery. With the help and support of the guild, we'll be able to hold some creative workshops. It's not the blue cottage with the gazebo, but it's a start.

I sometimes struggle with titles for my artwork, but this one - the title comes very naturally. "Be Still" (and know that I AM)

A Distant Shore

Thanksgiving weekend and pastel dust is filling the air. Yesterday was Thanksgiving. Kids in Ohio, parents in Florida - just me and my dog, my music and art. What could be better? Oh I know. It would be better if I were in Florida with my folks, or sitting around a large table with lots of family and friends. But that's ok. Smudges of pastel on my nose, and a new piece in front of me. Life is good.

Summers Gone By

It's Black Friday. There was a time when I'd be out there in the middle of all the other crazy shoppers. My kids are grown up now - the gift buying is so much easier. I have decided that this year, I would spend my time painting. So here we are. Two days, and two paintings. Oh how I wish I could do this every day!

Art Guild/Gallery/Auction

Wow - it's been quite a while since I've posted. I've been so busy lately - attending more meetings than anything else it seems. Being unable to paint for so long because of a broken arm was driving me bonkers. Now I hardly have time because of the guild stuff.

Guild stuff. Actually it's a good thing. A great group of people have come together to form the Swartz Creek Area Art Guild. Not only are we a guild, but we have an actual gallery too. And in the gallery, we have teaching space. It's all a wonderful thing. Because it's new, it's also in flux. I'm sure like any new business, things will be changing until it all comes together and then will run smoothly.
Saturday, December 4, the gallery is having a soft opening with a Members Show. Stop out as there will be drawings and raffles, with some great prizes. And of course there'll be refreshments. A lot of art is already up on the walls. Personally, I had two pieces ready to go, but darn if they didn't get sold. :) So, I'm scrambling here trying to get some more done, so it can make it to the next jurying date, and in time for our opening.

After our opening on Dec. 4 - there will be an Art Auction on December 12. All of the proceeds from that will go to the operating costs of the gallery. There is already a lot of art that has come in that will be auctioned off. So if you're reading this, I hope you'll come out and help support us. The auction will be held in the Swartz Creek Senior Center on Fortino Dr. in Swartz Creek. The doors will open at noon for viewing, with the auction beginning at 1pm. Refreshments will be served.

And finally - the teaching space. Classes are already beginning to form. Currently there is a drawing class in progress by Sharlene Howe, and I am teaching a pastel class on Tuesday evenings. In the future, classes in acrylics, charcoal, beading, and watercolor will be forming.

Nature's Abstracts

Yesterday was a gorgeous autumn day, so my son and I took advantage of it and went back to Richfield Park. We took well over 200 photographs, but the ones that impressed me most were those that were natural abstracts in nature. I don't know why, but I seem to be about the most accident prone person I know.

I slipped and fell in my kitchen, breaking a bone in my arm. Who would think that such a little break would result in such a large cast! Of course it's my right arm - and yes, I am right-handed!
Over the last couple of weeks I have gotten quite good at typing with one hand, and my writing is 'almost' legible now! Sadly though, not so good with a paintbrush. As you can imagine, it is making this creative very irritable, having lost the ability to paint, or work on my functional art!

I am able to be out and about for short periods of time before it starts swelling and causing me grief again. On this day, my son and I went to the Michigan Renaissance Festival for a couple of hours. Still new to the cast experience at that point, I didn't check before we left to see if I could actually get my sweatshirt on over the cast. HA! Live and learn!

Yesterday, my son and I took our dog Casey to one of the local parks here in Genesee County. Richfield Park is really quite pretty, and very big, bordering both sides of the Flint River. It's a wonderful hidden gem in this horribly depressed area. We'll be heading back in the coming weeks to catch the autumn colors.

Five more days....and this big cast will be removed, and replaced with a shorter one - and, my thumb will be released! Woo hoo! I can't wait!!

Art in the Park

This past Saturday was Swartz Creek's Art in the Park. What a beautiful day it was! This is probably one of the best little juried art fairs in this area. Of all the shows I have been in, this one is my favorite. The organizers really treat the artists well here - from their "drive up" check in, many volunteers helping set up your tent - to an endless array of home made baked treats and fresh veggies, tent sitters stopping by frequently offering water or a break - yes, this fair is definitely the best. There was a constant stream of people coming by, so I'm afraid I only got one photo all day long. But, I suppose that's a good thing! And, not only did I do well, but my son made and sold gourd birdhouses and got himself a tidy little bit of cash in his pocket as well! All in all - a very successful day for us both!

Recycled - Repurposed - New Life - Functional "Green" Art

I know some people are embarrassed when I stop along the curb and grab some oddball thing or another as we are driving along. And dumpsters....ooooh dumpsters! I love going to construction sites, because all that junk in the dumpster you see? A lot of it is really useful stuff! It's not junk I tell you - it's art, waiting to happen!

Not only do I keep my eyes scanning the curbs for a good find, but I also frequent the thrift stores. I look for stuff that is old and tired, but still has some life in it. Maybe not the same life it once lived, maybe it's got a new life waiting. It may be waiting to become loved once again, rather than be discarded or tossed to a landfill.

I really need a shop with some good wood tools - saws, drill presses, etc. I have so many ideas for things, that my mind is overflowing. And it kills me to pass something by, simply because I don't have the necessary tools to bring my vision to life.

For now, thought I'd show you a tired little table I picked up for a few bucks. Actually, it doesn't look all that tired anymore. It took a little elbow grease to remove it's former self, and then some creativity added to it - and what once was destined for a landfill, will soon (hopefully) be a treasured item for someone's home.

This photo shows it still in pieces - it's presently receiving multiple coats of satin polyurethane. I'll try and post another when it's done and ready for sale.

I having been working on another small work of art - and while I didn't quite think it was done - I posted it on my facebook page to get some reaction. Perhaps to see what others thought it needed. I had the picture in my cellphone, and showed it to a few people at work yesterday. Coolest thing happened. Someone said - "oh - it's done! Put your signature on it and I will buy it." :) Wow - way to make my day!

So here it is - the same "WIP" (blurry pic from my cellphone) that seemed to have touched someone enough to want it for their mantle.

I find the most difficult part of painting is actually coming up with a title. Sometimes the finished product inspires the title instantly. Other times, like now... I'm at a loss. So for now, we will simply call this Untitled.

Today is Father's Day. I wish I wasn't so far away from my dad. It's been increasingly more difficult for me to be so far away from my parents. It never bothered me when I was young. Now I find it very discomforting. I miss my parents. For anyone who has family nearby, I can only hope you are thankful and don't take each other for granted. It would be so great if I could pop in to see my folks every once in a while. Share a meal. Say "I love you" face to face.

Mourning's Mate

Life is never dull around here. That much I can say for sure. The other day we were in that horrible state. The next day when I came home from work, the lawn and trimming was done. My son helped me all evening long digging up our front yard for some new landscaping, and helped me make a nice rock border. He was back to the great kid I know.

So - I thought "Mourning in May" needed a mate.

A Bipolar Moment

Last night I sat at my desk listening to my son screaming from the other room. I started praying for his healing, but in doing so the tears began to flow. Enough already - we've endured enough. I'VE endured enough! God, please give me a break. I'm tired ... just so tired. Through my tears I saw a photograph poking out from a stack of papers ... so I got my pastels out and within an hour this appeared.

Thank you Father, for giving me that break and peace I so desperately needed.

New Season

It's a new season - and I'm not talking about Spring. This is a new season of my life. It's been rough going for the last few years. But now - I am renewed. This is my new season.

I just moved recently and haven't painted anything for months. Today though - I felt a new energy inside me and so I dug around through a file folder I keep of beautiful pictures and pieces of art that give me inspiration. I was stopped by a painting that I had saved from another artist. It was this painting that motivated me to get out my pastels and play in the dust.

This is my interpretation of Kit Mahoney's painting. No - it's not for sale. (sorry)

I was supposed to be cleaning. I have to dig through 11+ years of stuff that has accumulated in this house since my son and I moved in. And I need to pack it all up and get ready to move. I knew I should NOT have gone into my studio. Before I knew it, I had picked up some pastels and blurred out a landscape I started months ago - and began laying down color over color. Time totally escaped me - and two (or was it 3?) hours later, this appeared on the easel in front of me.

This is my first abstract angel in soft pastels.

As always, there seems to be a hole in time beginning the week prior to Thanksgiving up through New Years. My lapse in time actually began in October. I can't believe it's already January. So much has been going on, that I (sadly) haven't had the time to devote to this blog like I should. Back in October, my son and I traveled to Ocala, FL for their art festival. It was really fun being involved in a festival out of state, not to mention the largest I've ever been in. I haven't been totally non-productive. God put on my heart to try something new and different. I found myself splashing paint on canvas and angels have emerged. These were painted back in November and December. With the holidays, I didn't have much time to paint. But now... I need to get back after it. After all.. in only a few months it will be art festival season once again. Need to build up that inventory!

I was talking with a friend about being lonely. It was a natural that I chose this particular scene to paint after our conversation. I would much rather be alone in this place of solitude, then continue going on in life lonely. In painting this scene I am reminded how awesome our God is, and what a remarkable artist He is.

I subscribe to a number of newsletters and journals, blogs etc about pastels, tips and techniques. I recently read about a new paper that was just made available to the states and just had to try it and find out for myself if it was as they claimed. Oh... this stuff is awesome! It took a minute to get used to - but it does hold layers of pastel easily - and i didn't wear my fingertips off! As you can see this is a highly blended piece. I think it turned out quite nicely, and is a great recommendation for "Pastelmat".

It's great when you go to an art fair, marvel at someone else's talent and share with each other. I use photos for reference for my paintings. Granted, I do get around, and have been fortunate enough to gather a lot of fantastic images of my own. However, this past weekend I met a professional photographer who has been able to capture the images I could only wish for. We only chatted for a moment, but she has graciously allowed me to use her images for my pastels.

I know this blog is supposed to be a journey through my world in pastels. Well, I suppose I should retitle that, as I'm an eclectic artist. Then again, what artist isn't? Someone recently asked if I was selling my photography at the art festivals I set up at. I answered no.. but thought gosh... why aren't I? So I started by adding quite a few of my photographs to Fine Art America, where I sell giclee prints of my artwork.

Flint, MI - The Flint Farmers’ Market proudly announces the Dort Federal Credit Union “Taste of the Market” on Saturday, June 20, 2009. The event will take place from 11 AM to 2 PM at the Flint Farmers’ Market which is located at 420 East Boulevard Drive just off I-475 Exit 8A. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Dort Federal Credit Unions Taste of the Market will feature healthy cooking demonstrations by six professional chefs from the American Culinary Federation Flint-Saginaw Chapter (ACF). Visitors will also have the opportunity to buy and try specialty foods from regular market vendors. The ACF chefs will also participate in weekly cooking demonstrations at the Flint Farmers’ Market every Thursday at 12:00 P.M. on the market lawn. ...we get bored! I've spent the last few days basically laying on the couch and doing nothing. Today I'm feeling a little better, so I started puttering a little...

I found myself in an old silverware case, and before I knew it, I had myself a business card easel (or more appropriately - a recipe card holder). These will make great gifts for mom's birthday, mother's day, or a bridal shower gift! Not only was this easy to do, but rather fun, too! Now I have all sorts of things in mind of what to do with old silver.

Artrageous Minds

I started a nonprofit organization a couple years ago called Artrageous Minds. Raising a bipolar son on my own has been a difficult road for both of us. For many years he was misdiagnosed, and wrongly medicated. Our organization hopes to bring awareness to bipolar disorder and other mental health issues through art. (and music, poetry, dance...) There have been a number of setbacks in getting the organization off the ground - including a car accident that put me out of commission for 6 months, and then my home invaded - and computer stolen not just once.. but again after it was replaced. (rotten thief!)

So finally - two years later we're back in business. I am co-hosting an event in Troy MI, where we have Brian VanderArk from the Verve Pipe coming for a private performance. If you are in the area, and interested in coming please contact me! We will be having a silent auction as well as some art up for direct sale. I've also got a 5 foot hand carved black bear that will be raffled off that night.

Also, my booth at the Farmer's Market is open to any individual who is in support of mental health issues. I will "rent" space for a nominal charge in my booth for you to sell your art or craft. Please contact me for details.

I think the most difficult part of painting (for me) is coming up with the perfect title for the finished piece! Sometimes I get so frustrated, and find myself sitting here staring at it so long that I just totally go blank. I really wish the title would come quickly like some do. I guess this poor little butterfly will just have to be nameless for the time being.

I love Spring. Here in the north you spend months in the cold, everything buried under the snow. Most of our wildlife is hibernating, or have flown south for the winter. As the days begin to get a little longer, and the air begins to warm our skin, I watch for signs of life. Seeing a bud on a tree, the first Robin, hearing the frogs chirping - all the sights and sounds of Spring are a miracle I look forward to each year.

Not only is Karen Margulis the pastel artist that I admire so much that I find myself copying her style, but it seems that she and I tend to gravitate to many of the same places. I ran across a painting of hers and realized that I had nearly the exact same photograph from one of my trips to the NC Smokies. This is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth, and I love looking at this daily as it hangs on my wall.

Still not really pleased with the outcome, but once again I am publishing this anyway. It is a smaller painting, and looks pretty good framed. Most of the winter I had my pastels tucked away while I busied myself creating gourd bird houses and bird feeders for gifts and for sale. I was also busy playing with various different jewelry making ideas. I just spent a week in North Carolina, where I hope to move soon. Although I should be doing laundry, and getting some food in this house - this beautiful image was stuck in my mind. This is the Blue Ridge Mountains as seen from the parkway early in the morning as the fog and clouds were beginning to lift from the mountains. I hope you enjoy the view too.

Until now I had been painting on sandpaper, afraid to spend the money on sanded pastel papers. I think I've progressed enough to work on this fine paper on a regular basis now.

I can't understand exactly why I am not consistent in what I create. I suppose because I'm still so new to pastels. I had started on some other flower paintings and finally set them aside for another day. This image actually had my kids playing in the surf. I opted to leave them out for the time being. I may attempt to do the painting again and add them in then. For now though, I like the simplicity of nothing but the ocean, the beach and the sky.

I paint to escape the daily hassles. It soothes me. Prior to ever picking up a pastel, any kind of creative "thing" would help ease the stress and tension of the day. Today was one of those days. It didn't take long for my stress to start subsiding when I began working the clouds in this painting. This scene reminds me of my youth - spending weeks at our cottage, the rickety dock we'd jump from, or sit and fish for hours on end. I think I like painting clouds and water best.

I am still working from 2 very small packs of basic pastels and found I'm missing a lot of colors while I did this one. And being rather pleased with myself at the outcome of this painting, I broke down and ordered up a more complete set. This painting is done on 400 grit sandpaper and totally ripped up my fingertips! LOL... i'm going to get a new supply of 600 tonite. And then? I think I may be ready for the big girl paper - I would love suggestions of what to buy.

I had been sharing my painting by email with my parents in Florida. They seemed to be impressed with what I was doing, so I painted this one with them in mind. Back on the canal in Foxton England...

I took the photo of this painting and noticed a few things that bothered me, so afterward refined it a bit. Sorry, don't have another photo to show those changes. Trust me, it's a bit better!

I still don't think I have any particular style. It's still only been a month though since I picked up my first pastel. I study the paintings done by other artists, and am truly inspired by the work they create. This painting is my first attempt at trying a more impressionistic style. I was quite pleased, and although loved it as it was, I cut it in half and mounted each into it's own frame. Popped it up on ebay and it (they) sold! You have no idea how that made me feel....

I spent a couple weeks in England, and absolutely fell in love with the countryside there. As soon as I came home this was the first painting I did. The canals there offer a new painting at every turn. This may still be a little primitive? but I liked it enough to mat and frame it, and have it hanging in my own home - my little piece of England on my wall.

I bought some pastel pencils after watching a couple of videos on You Tube. I love how you can get some more intricate detail with them. Trees have always given me fits, and after removing most of them - I think I captured this alright. The original photo was a complete forest, and left nothing for the eye to travel to. Now not only does the eye travel through the water, but also into the woods upstream. It is the artist's interpretation, isn't it? I gave this painting to my friend in England for his hospitality.

Nearly every day I want to try and paint a new painting. This one looked very interesting to me, and similar to the fisherman one. I liked doing the mist, so figured dust rising from a horse's hooves would be similar. I still need practice in figures though. I ended up giving this as a gift to my good friend's father on my trip to England. He fancies himself an American cowboy, and he really liked this. I felt honored they actually hung this on their wall.

Back to sandpaper! I chose 600 grit and created this painting in an hour. I know it's not all that great - the fisherman could be better, but I've never been very good at figures. I still like the way the steam is rising from the water.

Crisp Point Lighthouse

One of my favorite places to visit is Crisp Point, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Sitting on the shore of Lake Superior is Crisp Point Lighthouse. I had taken this picture a few years ago, and decided to paint it. I used pastel paper this time, and found it was much harder to work with. I also don't care for the lines of the paper that show through. This painting took me a few hours to complete.

Just a little over a month ago, (april '08) I found a new joy in life - painting with pastels. I had the pleasure of taking a 2 hour class and found a new passion. I have decided to start this blog after finding a wonderful site called dailyartists.com. I do believe that with each pastel I paint, I'm already getting better. I'm excited about the possibilities of what I may be able to accomplish. At this point, I don't have a style. I'm sure that will evolve over time. I hope that you'll comment on my work. I've never had any formal fine art training, however I was pursuing a graphic arts degree at one time, and remember how much the critiques helped. So with that, I welcome your comments, good and bad.

During this workshop, the artist provided us with the pastels, and taped to an easel, he had a sheet of 400 grit sandpaper. I was very surprised when I started working the pastels into the sandpaper at how well it seemed to work. Later, I asked about what paper he suggests for future paintings, and he said I could buy the expensive stuff, but sandpaper works just the same, and no need for fixing. So off I went to Lowe's, and bought a small supply of my own sandpaper to continue playing.
